Handmade vintage rug from Zabol in Iran.
This is the distinctive opium poppy carpet design... so called from the opium poppies and opium smoking smbols in the rug. The story goes that unwed weavers use this smbolism in their carpets to attract the attention of opium dealers, opium being is one of the main trades in this wild-west region of Iran bordering Afghanistan and Baluchistan, Pakistan. Opium in this case represents wealth, and pain-relief if required!
These rugs are traditionally woven by Sistani, or native Zabolis who migrated south from Khorassan & Afghanistan 2-300 years ago and speak a Farsi dialect, but they have intermingled with ethnic Balouch who occupy this region.
